As organizations strive to cultivate more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplaces, fresh and innovative approaches to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives are needed. Here, we offer seven novel ideas for DEIB programs and events that can be held either in-person or digitally.
- Multicultural Storytelling Sessions
Host regular storytelling sessions where employees share personal stories about their unique backgrounds, cultures, or experiences. This initiative fosters understanding and empathy among employees, showcasing the richness of diversity within your organization. This can be done through webinars, podcasts, or even short video series. - Peer-Led Workshops
Invite employees to lead workshops on topics that they’re passionate about, which may be related to their personal identities, experiences, or causes they care about. This provides a platform for individuals to share knowledge and passions, while also fostering a culture of continuous learning. - Virtual Culture Exchanges
Arrange virtual exchanges or ‘trips’ to experience different cultures. This can involve virtual tours, cooking classes, language lessons, or presentations about different countries or cultures. This helps broaden employees’ horizons and cultivates a culture of respect and appreciation for diversity. - Employee Resource Group (ERG) Showcases
Host events where ERGs present their initiatives, achievements, and future plans to the wider company. This not only raises awareness about the various ERGs within your organization but also encourages cross-collaboration and broadens the reach of ERGs. - Intersectionality Workshops
Hold workshops that explore the concept of intersectionality – how different identities (race, gender, sexuality, disability, etc.) overlap and intersect. This helps deepen employees’ understanding of diversity and inclusion, and promotes more nuanced conversations around these topics. - Inclusive Fitness Programs
Create inclusive fitness programs that cater to different abilities and fitness levels. From yoga for all levels to wheelchair-friendly workouts, these programs can help foster inclusivity while promoting employee wellbeing. - Allyship Training Programs
Develop training programs focused on how to be an effective ally to different marginalized groups. This can include understanding privilege, bystander intervention training, and strategies for advocating for equity. Allyship training can equip employees with practical tools to foster a more inclusive and supportive workplace.
By implementing innovative and inclusive DEIB initiatives, organizations can make strides towards creating environments where all individuals feel valued, included, and able to thrive. Remember, the best DEIB initiatives are those that are continually evaluated and refined to ensure they meet the evolving needs of your diverse workforce.
